Concerning Crossbreds

Crossbreds, while fabulous, have a long and controversial history!  While some can live their lives without ever knowing they are of mixed blood, others have been tried and persecuted for the simple fact that they exist.  When it comes to crossbreds, it can be a very personal subject but - overall - the herds each tend to keep to a general viewpoint on them.

Herd Views on Crossbreds

Quick Reference:

  • Austerian: Not accepted.

  • Hihiri: Sometimes accepted.

  • Nombeko: Usually accepted.

  • Linx: Usually accepted.

  • Saraph: Sometimes accepted.

  • Scybilline: Sometimes accepted.

  • Shadow Alliance: Usually accepted.

Austerian Viewpoint

A rather traditional herd, Austerians don't particularly take a shine to crossbreds - in fact, they view them as abominations since they are not 'natural'.  While some could hide under the radar with the appropriate (or lack of) certain mutations, anything out of the norm (aka, forest deer horse) will most definitely feel some scrutiny.  If a cross is believed to be a purebred and simply the unfortunate owner of some odd mutations, they will not be persecuted but will definitely be seen at the lower end of the spectrum as far as rank goes (ie, if a lord were to have wings he would still be viewed as a lord but the 'ugliest' of them; it would also not be uncommon for parents to disown their children and move them to commoner/servant status to save face!).

If a crossbred were to be discovered for what it was, there might be several outcomes!  For instance, if it were discovered the sire or dam were untrue to their betrothed when the crossbred was created, it is likely that they would be persecuted for their adultery as well as the child since it would be considered an abomination.  If a cross were born to a parent who was not wedded then the foal will likely be disposed off while the parent would either be exiled or forced into servitude depending on the circumstance.

There are very few instances in which the resulting foal would not be killed within the realms of Auster so, if they do occur, the parents/their child must decide whether they will risk staying in Auster or brave the world as a Renegade to save their hides.

Hihiri Viewpoint

To the Hihiri, crossbreds are... strange.  In their history they have certainly had some odd individuals (whether they were actual crosses or simply individuals that inherited strange mutations from the gods is still hotly debated) but generally crosses are subject to the fate of the gods.  If they are given a vision from one of the Trinity, they are allowed a pass and will be accepted into the herd.  If they are deemed Blinds, not only are they sentenced to death but so are the parent(s)/other immediate family in an effort to rid the herd of the 'impurity'.

That being said, if a cross undergoes a Vigil and successfully receives a vision and can prove itself a helpful member of the herd they can live a semi-normal life, although they will most likely be watched more closely than a purebred Hihiri.  However, to be accepted a cross must be born into Hihiri lands; otherwise, they must undergo a Vigil immediately and - if a blind - they are sacrificed beneath the bones as a sacrifice to the gods.  If they are given a Vision, they must prove themselves an active member of the herd to be truly accepted.

Nombeko Viewpoint

Nombeko crosses are very few and far between (outside of Saraph, that is) since they often spend most of their time underground.  However, those that do exist are generally well-received since their unique mutations can offer aid in the battle against their predators!  The only downside to a crossbred Nombeko is that, in general, they are much too large for the tunnels and unless the individual has Earth magic day-to-day life might be impossible!  That being said, only Nombeko crosses that won't easily survive in the Plains are asked to leave and, at that, they are not forced to leave if they don't want to.

It is also not uncommon for Nombeko to accept renegade crosses into their lands if for nothing more than their own benefit!

Linx Viewpoint

Linx crosses are nearly unheard of!  This is mostly due to the fear of the Linx from other herds for their carnivorous diets and for the simple fact that, for much of the breeding season, they are locked away/segregated from the other herds!  When crosses do come to pass, they are expected to be successful upon their first hunt.  If so, they are accepted as one of the pack and will live a completely normal life among the other Linx.  Should they fail, however, they will forever live their life as an Omega.

Saraph Viewpoint

For the Saraphs, crossbreds are a hotly debated topic!

One the one talon, crossbreds bring forth a highly unique slave!  While there is a chance that some crosses might slip under the radar with the presence (or lack of) certain mutations, those who are discovered can result in a multitude of fates!  To be certain, no cross will ever be offered life as a free individual if discovered.  However, if they prove themselves valuable, they might be sold off as the most expensive if their skill set proves useful!

On the other talon, there are those that find crosses disgusting and abnormal.  If a cross were to fall into the wrong hands, it might very well be executed on the spot simply due to the fact it exists.  It is not uncommon for Saraphs who simply inherited a Rare mutation to be killed when a mutation outside of the norm appears!

All in all, crosses - especially those few Saraph crosses that do happen - are hotly contested.  Those who are found to have created a Saraph cross might be punished in a number of ways.  Tiercels will likely be castrated so that they can no longer breed and will forever wear the evidence of their crimes upon them - however, it isn't hard for a tiercel to place the blame on somebody else so it is rare that they are actually persecuted for their 'crime' against Roth.  For hens, however, it is much harder for them to prove their innocence.  Hens that birth a cross in Saraph are often subject to the torture of having their wings stripped away and forced into a life of servitude.

Scybilline Viewpoint

Crosses in Scybilline are viewed on an individual to individual basis - so long as they do not host the mutations of the sun god (Saraph).  All in all, being a Saraph cross in Scybilline is not well received.  In order to escape the most extreme punishment (death) crosses must not feature feathers, beaks, wings or bird talons.  However, if they are Moonblessed - depending on the circumstances of their birth - they might be forgiven.  In addition, a true black coat/Moonblessed coat and the lack of feathers (aka, bat wings) will often result in their 'unfortunate' looks being put to the side.  Golden or red individuals bearing any one of these mutations will immediately be killed to save the hatchling from its suffering.

When it comes to crosses from the other herds...  It is an often case-by-case basis.  If the cross were to truly accept Induala (or fake it well enough for them to believe it) they could likely live a fairly normal life.  Breeding might be out of the option for a cross (even if it were fertile) but overall those who accept Induala as their one and only deity can expect to live a decent life within the Scybilline territory.

However, those who are discovered to be crosses and do not take Induala as their goddess are dealt with swiftly and efficiently.  They are usually exiled with the rare individual being executed if circumstances arise that call for such a severe consequence.

Shadow Alliance Viewpoint

Crosses are a big part of the Shadows!  Their unique ability to wield multiple magic strains (albeit capped) and feature mutations that would otherwise be unavailable to the Shadows make them highly favored!  However, just like with any other individual (purebred or otherwise) crosses must prove that their strengths and overall skill set will benefit the Alliance rather than harm it.

All in all, so long as the cross accepts the values and morals of the Shadow Alliance, they will be accepted.

Creating a Cross

When creating a cross, it is important to keep a few details in mind!

Remember that Crossbred token must be purchased for all crossbreedings and always guarantees one fertile foal in Scybilline/Nombeko female crosses.  This does NOT stack on top of fertile egg rolls for Scybilline female breedings.

Regarding Starters:

  • You may choose either parent herd (ex, either Auster or Saraph in an Austerian x Saraph cross) to provide the 'Automatic' mutations.

  • If you do not choose for your character to inherit one parent's automatic herd mutations, the starter can inherit them as Starter mutations (ie, an Auster x Saraph cross who has chosen to inherit Wings & an Omnivorous Digestive system as their Automatic mutations can inherit Branching Tines and Magical Mutations each as a Single Starter mutation.

  • Magic types will be rolled as normal for other herds; however, they will be subject to a Medium magic cap (Ie, an Auster x Saraph cross can be rolled for Rare magic but can only inherit Medium level Esprit OR Electricty magic).

  • Starters will be rolled for Fertility upon creation!

Regarding Foals:

  • You may choose either parent to provide the Automatic mutations (ie, Hihiri x Scybilline, you can inherit either the Fins/Pescatarian diet as the Auto or Bioluminescent Scales/Omnivorous diet as the Auto).

  • If you do not choose for the foal to inherit one parent's auto mutations, those mutations can be inherited as a general mutation (remember foals are not limited to the three-mutation Starter limit!).

  • Magic types will be purely inherited from the parents; if the parents have different magic types, they can inherit either magic type with a Medium cap.  Parents with the same magic type can put forth a foal with an Advanced magic cap.  One parent with magic will result in a Basic Magic cap (with the exclusion of Hihiri crosses; see the Hihiri notes below).

  • Foals will be rolled for Fertility upon breeding submission!

Crossbreeding: The Finer Details

While frowned upon, crossbreds can and do happen from time to time!

Please note that crossbreds are highly frowned upon so are therefore extremely rare.  In addition, in order to breed two characters from different herds you must present a very good reason (aka, buy a Crossbreeding Token - don't worry it's only a Basic reward!) for why/how the characters came together when all herds look upon crosses with hostility!

All crossbreeds, including in-game born foals, will most likely be sterile!  There is a very small chance at fertility that will be rolled at the time of the breeding.  If you do not get lucky, the only way to make your crossbred fertile is through a Crossbred Fertility Token purchase OR a Divine reward.

While crosses may inherit a fantastic array of mutation combinations so long as they are featured in at least one of their parents, crossbred foals will experience magical limitations and caps.

As of March 9th, all crossbreds - regardless of generation - will have their magic capped at Medium level.

These caps will apply across all the magic strains a cross has (ie, if they have a second or third strain).

Remember that crossbreds are not generally accepted into other herds or may not be able to survive in certain territories if they do not have the appropriate mutations!  For example, a Hihiri/Saraph crossbred may sound glorious with fin-like wings but, since fins must stay moist, they will be exceptionally uncomfortable because of the dry Saraph climate and all/most fins will likely dry out and fall off!

Be prepared for the consequences that will affect your crossbred foal throughout its life.

Fertility and Crossbred Inheritance

When breeding two Purebreds from different herds:

When breeding two Stater/Purebreds there will be a…
- 5% chance of Inherited Fertility
- 95% chance of being Sterile

Remember, if your crossbred foal does not inherit fertility, it can be purchased at a later time with a Salamander reward!

When breeding a Fertile Crossbred:
This requires a little bit more explanation!  If you have purchased or won a fertile crossbred token, this is how the breeding breakdown goes!  Note that, for RNG foals, automatically Infertile Foals listed below will be RNGed to determine their fertility at the rate mentioned above.

Fertile Crossbred Breeding (AxB will be our example).

  • AxB Fertile Cross x Purebred A OR Purebred B = 50/50 chance at Fertile Foal.

  • AxB Fertile Cross x AxB Fertile Cross = 50/50 chance at Fertile Foal.

  • AxB Fertile Cross x Purebred C or Purebred D = Infertile Foal.

  • AxB Fertile Cross x CxD Fertile Cross = Infertile Foal.

  • AxB Fertile Cross x BxC Fertile Cross = Infertile Foal.

  • All crosses including 3 bloodlines or more will get rolled for fertility, regardless of whether or not they are being bred back to a Purebred or Fertile Cross of a similar bloodline.

    • E.g. AxBxC Fertile Cross x Purebred A = Rolled Fertility

Hihiri Notes

Please remember that Hihiri crosses (with aquatic mutations) are subject to desert rolls if they attempt to cross the desert!

When breeding a Hihiri cross (Starter) there will be the option of…
One Ability + Medium Magic Cap (Strain roll based on non-Hihiri parent)
Two Abilities + Basic Magic Cap (Strain roll based on non-Hihiri parent)

When breeding a Hihiri cross (Foal with one magical parent) there will be the option of…
One Ability + Medium Magic Cap (Strain inherited from magical parent)
Two Abilities + Basic Magic Cap (Strain inherited from magical parent)

When breeding a Hihiri cross (Foal with two magical parents) there will be the option of…
One Ability + Medium Magic Cap (Strain inherited from either parent)
Two Abilities + Basic Magic Cap (Strain inherited from either parent)
