Herds of Anomalous

Rogues and Renegades

Renegades of Anomalous

With the renegade herds/renegades themselves gaining in popularity, a whole journal dedicated entirely to them was in order!  But first off... what does it mean to be a renegade?  A renegade is, by definition, a "person who deserts and betrays an organization, country, or set of principles".  In Anomalous, this refers to an individual (or set of individuals, in the case of a Renegade herd) who has deflected from the herd of their bloodline.  Some may still reside within their bloodline's ancestral territories (ie, a Renegade Hihiri who still has a home within the Hihiri islands but does not interact with the Hihiri herd if they can help it) while others leave these areas entirely in preference to another territory or life as a wanderer.  Note that Renegades are different than traveling merchants/traders who, for their occupation, journey across Anomalous to buy, sell, or collect goods not normally available to them.  Renegades, most often, do not share the common beliefs or have seen what they deem injustices during their time with their home herds and have cut ties with them (for example, a Scybilline that doesn't like the moon goddess Induala and has gone rogue to practice his/her own beliefs).

Renegades, while generally viewed with suspicion, aren't necessary evil!  As mentioned before, some renegades simply don't care for all or some of their herd's customs, prefer life as a hermit/wanderer with no intention of returning home, or have seen something they cannot stand to live around in their former homes.  Further still, some renegades were born into the life as a renegade and, for them, they have no idea of what it's like to live among the larger herds of Anomalous.

All Renegade Herds start with 5-10 Player Characters, and 5 NPC's, if there are more than 5 NPC's within a herd, it uses a PC slot. If needed, additional slots may be applied for.

There are two types of Renegades:

Loners/Rogues - Individuals who have deflected from their bloodline herd and have remained on their own.  Loners usually set up shop in their own private corner of the world where they won't be under the watchful eyes of the other herds.  Rogues, on the other hand, are usually on the move and stop in their travels only when necessary.

Renegade Herds - A group of renegades that have decided to travel/live together after leaving their home herds!  Typically, renegade herds are not that large simply due to the fact that it is far more likely that a large group will get caught than those smaller in number.  Renegade herds are, usually, nomadic but some will settle in areas not often visited by the bulk of a territory's main herd!  Most of the time, renegades that join a herd share some sort of belief/aspiration that ties them to the other renegades such as familial ties, similar religious views, or similar abnormalities (for example, Austerian renegades born with deformed horns might deflect and form their own band!)

Herd Views on Renegades:

Depending on the territory within which they reside, Loners or Renegade Herds may or may not be accepted/tolerated!

  • Austerians: Historically, Auster has always turned away renegade individuals or groups.  However, with the crowning of the new Queen Cadhara, they have a much more 'open-door' outlook on the matter.  Renegade individuals are tolerated so long as they mean well and, while peaceful individuals may be allowed to stay, larger groups are only allowed to pass through under the watchful gaze of the Austerian guard.

  • Linx: Previously, Linx were believed to be fearsome beasts that ate any intruders!  Since then, this has been disproved.  The Linx may allow shelter to kind-hearted loners and rogues that need shelter during the winter months and, with the mountain ranges being so vast, may even tolerate stationary renegade herds.  However, the siege by the Shadow Alliance upon their tunnels in the Spring/Summer of Year 1996 has left them with a foul taste in their mouth so they may be more wary.

  • Hihiri: Loners/rogues and even renegade herds may be tolerated only if the renegades are clearly Hihiri/Hihiri crosses!  All others will be chased out.

  • Nombeko: Welcomed/tolerated in the past, although after the Shadows laid waste to their Plains in the Winter of 1995 they are a bit more wary of large, renegade herds and will probably confront any renegades about their intentions if they come too close.

  • Saraph:  Inside the Gardens of Elysia, no longers/rogues/renegade herds are tolerated.  If they are found they are always chased out - if not killed outright!  In the desert, traveling bands of renegades in the northern reaches of the Saraph territory are tolerated... If they can survive.

  • Scybilline: Diurnal renegades/renegade herds can often come and go on the outer edges of Scybilline territory without much fuss!  However, come nightfall, they must take care not to wander too close.  Renegades/renegade herds of Scybilline descent may be tolerated - provided they are smart enough to follow the mantra 'out of sight, out of mind'!

Note that the safest plan of action for a renegade/renegade herd is to keep moving!  No one appreciates their resources being used (especially by an individual(s) that they would not necessarily get along with) so never staying in one place too long can help keep anyone's feathers from getting overly ruffled!

Renegade Herds & How to Make Your Own!

Now and then, you members have a spark of creativity and have ideas for renegade herds of your own and want to share!  We do allow the creation of Renegade herds, so long as their general ideas will work within current (and eventual, heh) Anomalous lore! In order to create your own renegade herd and submit it to the group for review, fill out the google form linked below.

We've written out what information you should have prepared beforehand. Please remember to send a note to the group with your herd's name when you've finished, so we know that there is a new herd for us to review! Staff will review the Renegade herd and ask for small critiques/changes where necessary if needed. Once your herd is completed, it will be uploaded to the journal pages on our Anomalous Archive account.

Renegade Herd Name: What is the name of your renegade herd?
Herd Type: Does the herd travel across Anomalous (Roaming)?  Or do they live in one place (Stationary)?
Typical Location: For wandering herds, what regions do they typically pass through?  For stationary herds, where is their home base?
Herd Status: Open or closed.  Is your herd open to new members or is it closed?

Herd Culture: The more detail the better!  What is the herd like?  Why did they initially become renegades?  Why did the first - whoever he/she/they were - decide to become a group rather than live alone?  Why do they travel/live where they do?  What do they eat?  Do they hold a separate religious belief or do they follow the gods of Anomalous, just on their own terms?  Do they welcome outsiders or are they friendly to others?  Are they traders, artists, or thieves?  Do they have a set of rules and laws to guide them or is it a free for all?  Do they hold superstitions or only allow those with certain features among their ranks?  Let us - and by extension, anyone who might want to join - know as much as you can about your herd!
Herd Ranks: What kind of ranks exist within your herd?  Is there a leader or is this just a small, family band ?  Leaders can be NPC.  Please include a description of what the rank's position requires and whatever responsibilities they may hold.

Current Members: Are there any important PC/NPC characters that are currently members of this herd?

If you'd like to include more information, by all means do so!
