The Land and Wildlife

The Wildlife of Anomalous

While the mutated equines of the various herds are the largest and most influential inhabitants of Anomalous, they are not alone!  From predators to prey animals, Anomalites share their world with creatures both large (in some cases very large) and small.  While this is not a complete list, here are just a few of the creatures that can be seen across Anomalous.  Bolded creatures are sometimes found either super-sized or down-sized, although their normal sized cousins may still be found running around.  Note that this is not a complete list!  If you would like to clarify whether or not a creature can be found in a certain area, do not hesitate to ask.

Territoy and Loctions

Free-Roaming Territory

Sonder Vale:

  • Wind Bison | Sonder Vale - Free-Roaming Territory
In the Autumn of Year 2001, the Linx Miné offered an Air Formaris scale to the Actaeos shrine in Valeville.  In its wake, the Formaris dragon left some surprising new animals to roam about the Sonder Vale! Simply dubbed, the new wind bison are large beasts that spend the majority of their days grazing upon the lush grasses of the Vale.  Greyish-white in coat like the clouds on a sunny day, these wind bison follow the same migration patterns as the caribou, making them an additional food source for Anomalous predators to hunt. Born with a pair of wings, baby wind bison can not only walk very shortly after birth but - as soon as they shed their feathery baby down - can also fly to help escape predators!  As wind bison age, their increasing size slowly renders them flightless (comically, their wings do not seem to grow as they age and swiftly become disproportionate to their bulk) but, with an impressive size and a pair of horns on both genders, this doesn’t seem to bother them much. When flight is no longer an option, a wind bison mostly uses their wings to attract mates or blow away pesky flies.  Although these creatures are quite gentle and don’t tend to pick a fight, they aren’t afraid to finish one!  The bellows of the creatures are quite loud, capable of being heard for miles around.

Lake Vesta:

  • Lake Vesta’s "Loch Ness" Monster (Vestella) | Lake Vesta, Free-Roaming Territory
The offering of a trinity of Earth scales at the Actaeos shrine in Lake Vesta by Ulla and Blue yielded a surprising result!  From the lake itself the dragons rose and, in their wake, waves sparking with magical energy rippled out from the center and rushed to the shores.  Not but an hour later, when the waves had calmed and the lake’s surface was glassy once more, the first sighting of something with a long neck rising from the water was had.  Resurrected by the intense magical outburst of the dragons, it appears that something ancient and prehistoric has been brought back to life! Rock-like plates cover the creature’s body and sapphire scales adorn its neck and back, catching the light as it comes to the surface to sunbathe.  The creature, although massive, seems to be quite friendly and when it ventures to the surface if it spots passersby on the shoreline it readily will swim over for a visit or, with a back wide enough to accommodate two-three Anomali at a time, to offer rides to the other side of the lake! The creature, although clearly intelligent and apparently able to understand what is being said, speaks only in whale-like songs or chirps.  A generally happy creature, the fondly named Vestella appears to enjoy singing and, on a clear night, her songs can be heard for miles. Beware, though, those who mean her or the lake that she calls home harm. As the self-appointed guardian of the lake, Vestella takes the health of both the lake’s inhabitants and visitors quite seriously and will readily defend anyone in need of assistance!

  • Otter

  • Badger - Supersized, ~ 3xs larger.  Harmless unless provoked.

  • Pine Marten

  • Wildcat

  • Polecat

  • Least Weasel

  • Woodland Wolves - Austerian Territory

    • Despite Micare’s best efforts, an Earth scale carried by a Shadow named Lann was dedicated to Astraek in the Autumn of Year 2001.  The earth trembled, the trees shook, and - as expected - a mighty Earth Formaris dragon was released. But, as its brightly covered body emerged from the earth and disappeared into the sky, it wasn’t immediately apparent what, exactly, had changed…  Then, the howling began. The Austerian guard was dispatched to chase out the wolves but not a trace of a pack could be found… It wouldn’t be until a pair of white-faced Austerians raced into the palace, babbling on about wolves in the forest who had materialized out of the undergrowth that anyone realized what peril had befallen the forest.  A pack of wolves has indeed made the forests of Auster its home but this is not your ordinary wolf pack. Standing 12 hands tall at the shoulder, these wolves seem to be crafted out of the forest itself. With armored bodies covered in bark and masked in moss and other foliage, these wolves make formidable opponents to any who should cross their paths.  What’s worse? They can travel the forest without leaving so much as a trace, capable of melting in and out of their surroundings like ghosts. Their hungry howls may be the only warning you get that you’re being hunted…

Large Ungulates:

  • Roe Deer

  • Wild Boar - Supersized, ~ 3xs larger.  Harmless unless provoked.

  • Red Deer - Supersized, ~2-3x’s Larger.

  • The Whispering Guardians

    • In the Autumn of 2001, the offering of an Earth Scale and an Air Scale to Actaeos' shrine in Auster by Aura released the Formaris Earth Dragon and Formaris Wind Dragon into the world! Later, reports from the Austerian guard and citizens begin to filter in of strange sounds in the forest. And then an elderly cultivator brings word of a miraculous event witnessed not far from the shrine- from the earth have emerged a small herd of massive creatures not unlike the caribou found in Linx. The largest among them stand more than twice as high as the tallest Austers, and their great branching antlers reach farther across than the length of their huge bodies. Their stone tines are sprinkled with small holes that form pipes within, and as wind passes through them, they release varying pitches of sound, from airy whistling to windy horn-like calls. Vines and vegetation often drape their bodies, taking root after snagging on the giants during their passage through the great trees of the Auster Wood. They are otherwise quiet and peaceful creatures, though none have yet dared to find how they react when provoked.

  • Wood Mouse

  • Clarion Squirrels - Auster Wood, Austerian Territory

    • In the Autumn of Year 2001, an Air Formaris Scale was offered to the shrine of Actaeos by the Austerian prince, Marcus!    The wind picked up, rattling the leaves of the nearby trees and, with a powerful gust that sent ripples in the forest around them, an Air Formaris dragon was unleashed!  Shortly thereafter, the surprised chirping of nearby squirrels got louder and louder… and louder? It appears that, in the massive magical outburst from the dragon’s release, the squirrels in the nearby vicinity of the shrine were transformed!  Now much larger than their fellow Austerian squirrels, the Clarion Squirrels are fast, agile, and LOUD! These squirrels, with their oversized ears, have impressive hearing and also seem to have exceptional eyesight capable of capturing even the tiniest amount of motion.  As such, the clarion squirrels have become an invaluable asset to the inhabitants of Auster, sounding the alarm when anything nefarious approaches - including the dangerous woodland wolves!

  • Et's Guardian - Manaonui Ocean, Hihiri Territory

    • In the Autumn of Year 2001, the Hihiri stallion Vayu offered a Water Formaris Scale to the Ancient Shrine of Et, the goddess of the earth.  Almost immediately, thick smoke began to billow from the top of the volcano, Ahi Waha, setting the inhabitants into a panic at the prospect of a disastrous volcanic eruption - and erupt it did… but not in the manner that the Hihiri tribe was expecting!  From the mouth of the volcano, something burst. With a body formed from hot, molten rock, it oozed down the side of the volcano, leaving a path of orange-hot lava in its wake as it slowly slithered toward the sea. Once there, the creature dove into the water without hesitation.  Steam rose from its sides as the ocean water cooled its lava rock hide but, as its tail disappeared out of view, for weeks no one knew what had emerged from the volcano or, more importantly, where it had gone. It wouldn’t be until some young Hihiri foals were swimming much farther than they should have been that the creature was again seen, when it attacked a giant shark that had been stalking the children!  What Vayu’s scale gave birth to has now been identified as some sort of massive sea serpent, with a body covered in lava-rock scales that are warm to the touch and vibrant red fins to help guide it through the water. It appears to be a mostly peaceful yet reclusive creature who travels the Manaonui Ocean and, thanks to its thick scales and sharp teeth, can easily make a meal out of the mega-sharks that patrol the Hihiri shores.  Simply dubbed Et’s Guardian, over the years corals of all kinds will begin to attach to its rocky scales, granting color and beauty to the creature’s rugged exterior.

A few hours after this, strange, low, trumpeting calls were heard across the tundra; and a few days later, hunting parties would return with stories of new creatures sighted across the lands of Anomalous. Their descriptions are, at first, confusing; Shaggy, four-legged creatures, with immense tusks, similar to but ultimately unlike those of a boar; so large that they barely noticed the smaller trackers in their midst. They have long, flexible appendages on their faces in place of a more conventional nose, which appear to be the source of their trumpeting. The name 'Mammoth' is assigned to this gargantuan creatures in short order, due to their sheer size. Trackers report that there are at least two separate herds present, and that they appear to eat plants, and be largely peaceful unless disturbed.

  • Stormbirds- Nombeko Plains, Nombeko Territory

    • Shortly after the dragon was raised, the aftereffects of its passage was made known in Nombeko. In the Autumn of 2001, the offering of an Earth Scale to Astraek's shrine by Aileen of the Shadow Vanguard caused Nombeko to be assailed by rumbling quakes and thunderstorms for a full day and a night. This unseasonable weather was fine, but over the next few days, loud crackling 'cries' could be heard, like the strike of lightning on ground- though the skies had returned clear and crisp.
A young Catcher raced into The Cavern Room in a panic once the rains had cleared, trembling and scared. He reported a sight- an awe-inspiring, terrifying sight. He'd been ambushed by an eagle, but before it could snatch him up, something cracking and dark and massive bore down upon the bird with a thundercrack shriek and cruel talons. He reported, breathlessly, that this massive, Vulture-like creature (who would soon be known to Nombeko as 'Stormbirds') had eaten the eagle, then and there, and afterwards had turned it's ominous pale eyes on him, and he'd had to bolt for the nearest tunnel to be safe.
These Stormbirds fly like dark blue-grey shadows over Nombeko, singly or in pairs, Perching in the Linx Foothills and preying on both the giant eagles, and ant anomali foolish enough to be out in the open when they're on the hunt.
Electricity crackles from their feathers, and it's soon discovered that they'll shock their prey if they seem like they're going to lose a hunt. Watchers are suddenly, to the Nombeko, more important than ever.

  • Rumbling Terrors- Trail of the Lost, Saraph Sand-Dunes, Saraph Territory

    • For a short while in Saraph, nothing seems amiss.
Then, a merchant caravan is late. This in itself is not unusual. Rare, for an entire caravan to be lost, but not unusual.
Then, another is lost, by a slaver who's a neighbour of the merchant.
Then, a third is lost, but this time there is a survivor- a panicked champagne tiercel with bright purple feathers who tells his story over a strong drink. His caravan was set on by what he describes as "Giant Worms"- great reddish-purple beasts with rows of sharp teeth, no discernable eyes, and a length he could only guess at. They burrow under the sand, and are heralded by shifting waves across the surface of the desert, and and unsteadiness beneath one's feet. He goes on at length describing the sights of seeing his companions eaten by these creatures, and the destruction they left in their wake... Of course, he muses (well and truly drunk by now) They left some fine loot un-eaten.....

  • Star-Encrusted Swarm - Fire Bird’s Gorge Saraph Territory

    • In Autumn of 2001, the offering of an air scale by Jiraiya to Actaeos in Nombeko lands raised the Air Formaris dragon. When darkness fell that night, a strange hum was heard throughout Fire Bird’s Gorge. Curious residents discovered the air filled with glittering, glowing dragonflies who filled the chasms, canyons and gorges like stars across the night sky. As dawn approaches, the bugs cease to glow and become incredibly difficult to find or catch. During the night however, the dragonflies themselves are hard to miss! They are beautiful creatures to look upon and quite the delicacy when eaten. The Star-Encrusted Swarm seems to migratory, though their full route has yet to be discovered. What is known is that they will always return to Fire Bird's Gorge in Autumn.

  • Elysia’s Valkyries | The Saraph Sand Dunes, Saraph Territory

    • In the Autumn of Year 2001, the young Saraphs Skiamaki and Illumine ventured to the Mirror Pools to offer their Water Formaris scales to Elysia’s Ancient Shrine!  The surface of the Mirror Pool bubbled, glowing brighter and brighter until an odd cry - somewhere between falcon’s scree and a swan’s trumpet - echoed against the sandstone walls!  From within the Mirror Pool erupted a Water Formaris dragon and, around it, a swarm of dog-sized birds that spiraled around the dragon as it rocketed toward the sky. The birds circled above the Mirror Pools for a time, long after the dragon had disappeared from view, before - as a flock - they took flight themselves.  Quite beautiful to behold, the newly dubbed ‘Valkyrie’ birds are fierce looking creatures caught somewhere in between a swan and a falcon hybrid. The birds - whose elaborate white plumage is dusted with blue and gold notes that catch the sunlight - migrate around the Saraph territory, alighting wherever the wind seems to take them and hovering around bodies of water.  Territorial, they are fiercely protective of their desert home and - in particular - seem to hold a particular sense of vengeance against the newly arrived sandwyrms that have infested Saraph’s deserts. It is said that, if one possesses a feather of a valkyrie, that a flock of them can be summoned in a time of need...
